Thursday Oct. 10. It rained on and off all night and it
doesn’t get much better during the day. I think we see the sun twice. No
matter, it has to rain sometimes! At least Opa Henk doesn’t miss much when he’s
working ;) We turn the heater up a little, make coffee, I put the tomatoes on
to stew into sauce, and we get comfortable. After lunch we do need a little bit
of fresh air, it’s relatively dry, so the chicken and mushrooms go in with the
tomatoes and we go for a ride. And that’s when the fun starts.
-
Something running on the hill behind the
campground. I’m hoping it’s an interesting animal but Henk thinks it’s a
rabbit.
-
Before we leave the campground, three bison at
the side of the road. Didn’t know they are SO! BIG!
-
One curve later, a few bison on the hillside on
the right, with a small herd of mule deer in front of them.
-
From a look-out point on a side road, five bison
all over the group camping area below, it looks like the boy scouts in those
little tents will have plenty to tell back home ;)
-
Past the visitor center, more bison on the
mountainside. Did I mention this island has its own little mountain ridge?
-
At the old ranch, now a museum, a sleepy great
horned owl in a tree. Aha. That explains the rabbit (or vv.)
- That’s
where the road ends. On the way back, three pronghorn antelope just off the
road where it starts rising towards the mountain.
-
A few curves further down, five more pronghorn.
-
When we’re back at the campground, the bison are
ON the campground. Didn’t know they are SOOO! BIG! Btw, that’s the nose of our
loaner car, parked in front of the RV.
-
Looking after them when they graze onwards, a
coyote on the sandflats. That also explains the rabbit.
-
And dinner was delicious.
Btw, internet connections are spotty. It's a lot easier to write posts than to post them...
