Monday - Wednesday April 2-4

There are a few pictures with yesterday's post, of Yosemite Valley. And now for today's update.

Monday morning Opa supervised more frolicking in the pool by the little guys while Deirdre and I straightened up the RV.  Then Opa got us disconnected and we were cruising before 10. A tiny bit of rte 99 to rte 58, which delivered us in 2 ½ hrs to Barstow. The Calico KOA campground was just past Barstow on Rte 15. A cute little RV park with a few teepees on the side, 66 RV spots, an unheated pool (the kids went in anyway – but not for very long…), a large and very cool playground with climbing wall, and reclining little bikes for rent. Riley complained “it hurts in my body, here and here and here” and it took us a day and a half to figure out it was his sore reclining bike muscles… The KOA is at the same exit as Peggy Sue’s diner, where apparently everybody who drives rte 15 stops to eat. So we did.

Yesterday we left Barstow a bit earlier in the day and made it, all via rte 15, to the Oasis RV Resort in Las Vegas by noon. (New state! Nevada!) This was good because the pools there were heated. Jamie, Deirdre’s friend arrived shortly with her little feller and we all spend almost the entire afternoon in and next to the pool. I had a nap in the sun. Lovely. Btw, I lied, got a few RV parks mixed up maybe, they only had two pools plus the hot tub. On the other hand, not 700 RV spots but 990. No matter, the sound of the other 989 RV people was drowned out nicely by the background noise from the highway and the airport…

After dinner I stripped the RV of everything I want to take home to Londonderry and piled it on the picnic table. Opa had a small conniption ;) but then the two of us got almost all of it into the Prius somehow. All we had to do in the morning was pack Deirdre and the kids back into their car and wave them off with lots of kisses and promises of coming back real soon. By 8:30 they drove west, back to L.A., and we took off eastwards in the RV with the tightly packed Prius in tow. We picked up rte 215 around the city, then rte 515 out of the city, over the Hoover Dam. From there we drove straight south on rte 93 in Arizona until we got to Kingsman and rte 40.
We reached Parks, just west of Flagstaff, before 1 and took a dusty side road to get the RV stored next to the garage of Keith’s house. Keith is Deirdre and Jeff’s neighbor in L.A., and he said we could leave the RV in Parks, no problem. There is a tight curve in his driveway but we had no trouble with it. Emptied out any leftover water just in case it freezes, gave the leftover refrigerated items (except of course the dutch cheese, Jon’s relish, and the Baby Ray’s bbq sauce) to the lady that watches the house, stuffed yet a few more things into the Prius. Then we wiped the red dust off the windshield and 1 ½ hr later we were on rte 40 again. Stopped to fill up the car with regular gas – so cheap! Less than $4! – and we have been on our way east at a steady 75 to 80 mph. We just had dinner at Applebees in Gallup, New Mexico. Quite a few states today. The goal is Albuquerque and hopefully we’ll be there by 8:30 or 9. Of course we’ll be in another timezone so they’ll call it 9:30 or 10, but we will know what time it really is, won’t we.
