Hello from San Antonio! And what a great place to be right about now. But more about that later!
Thursday we made it as far as Fort Stockton, which is a place in the middle of absolutely nowhere in NW Texas. An hour and a half from the nearest towns in both directions. But, there is a 24 hr WalMart, and we spent the night with five other RV's and two trucks on the far end of their parking lot.
Yesterday we got rolling early and got to San Antonio by 3. Nice RV park near the center. Which is where we are going now, Opa is ready, so I'll finish this later!

Yesterday's drive went smoothly. We never left rte 10 and never left Texas. The desert landscape - as expected - slowly changed, first here and there a juniper or a dry looking tree in between the widely spaced shrub, then a few more, after a while many, but still widely spaced with dry grass underneath. We think they're oaks. Then we started to see real spring green too. Pink, red and yellow flowers along the road - maybe mariposa lilies, but hey, I don't know, we didn't stop to have a closer look.
It was cloudy at first, but got sunny enough by the time we got here. And here we were, backing into a RV spot, connecting the water etc, and the guy from behind us comes over and says, "Are you dutch?" He guessed from the numberplates. The nicest dutch couple. We chatted about all the places we and they've been etc etc, and ended up going out for dinner on the River Walk (you must look this up on google and then book a long weekend trip - it's really really cool). We ate on a terrace along the river. It was 80 degrees or so, there was live music, talking people all around, river cruise boats floating by, and Ben & Jerry's for dessert. We had a ball.
Today we went back for a daytime look. Strolled along the river first and then we checked out the Alamo. Then we had lunch on a different terrace. We checked out the artsy area and Opa bought me a new handbag I was admiring, a southwestern weave with three cocopelli guys, my favorite style bag which is one big pocket, and with a long enough strap to hang around my neck. I shoved the old handbag right into it so I could start using it right away. After some more strolling - it was in the 90's so we didn't rush - and some more Ben & Jerry's, we went to visit one of the missions and then off to WalMart for groceries. And along the way, we added white-winged doves and yellow-crowned herons to the bird list.
Good thing we put the A/C on before we left. The RV was quite pleasant. Right now we're cooling it down some more before we go to bed. Ahh, the pleasures of living in the south... Mind you, it must be really hot here in the summer. They must have some kind of problems here, right? It just wouldn't be fair otherwise.
